Memory foam mattresses are the latest type of mattress launched in the market. Memory foam mattresses are manufactured by using specially designed foam, which has unique properties. Which mattress topper should I get?
I've done some research and I know what I like, but it has come down to these two (I looked at some of the Overstock toppers, but I felt these two will match well for their price as well):

I chose the 2-inch because I like firm beds, so I don't think the 3-inches would help too much and as far as density goes, I feel like anything over 2 lbs/cubic ft is fine. Any suggestions?

LOVE IT! Got a very firm mattress that was making my shoulders and hips hurt, this pad COMPLETELY fixed the problem. It is smaller than the bed but I hardly notice, I think it has spread out with time. The smell took about 2 weeks to completely go away.
I purchased the Sleep Better memory foam topper after reading tons of reviews on a variety of brands. I added the topper to my brand new mattress set because I was starved for the best rest possible. Wow! After years of restless nights, I now enjoy turning in at night knowing that I can expect to sleep peacefully and comfortably.
I liked this at first but now after a year of use it is getting really painful to sleep on my bed. I did some research and realized that this foam is 2.5lbs/square foot which is not enough support for even pixies like me. you need at least 4-5lb density foam, this is half of what i should have got. I am only 110 lbs, my bf is 150, and there are uncomfortable indentions in the foam now that dont spring back
We have had a regular mattress for quite some time now. I had heard that these mattress toppers were good in previous reviews. I decided to try the 2 inch based on a review that said the 3 inch was just too much. The topper arrived in a few days after purchase in a much smaller box than I anticipated, but once we took it out it expanded to what I was expecting. There is a bit of a smell with it, but that goes away after a few days. I have some newer sheets that have that deep pocket and with the topper, the sheets actually fit the bed much better now. I really enjoy the topper and sleep much better now. I was afraid we might get hot, but that is not the case. My husband has issues sleeping due to back pain and he has noticed a considerable decrease in pain and is also sleeping better. I would recommend this item for anyone that uses just a regular mattress. It was well worth the money.
Purchased this product after unsuccessful back surgery – it fit right over our fairly firm futon queen mattress and helps tremendously with relieving pressure points. Other reviews have mentioned the chemical smell. It is strong, but the manufacturer does include instructions regarding this and that it should be aired out for AT LEAST 24 hours.
The 2 inch one would probably have been a better choice as this is almost too thick, but it definitely made a difference with sleeping.
The only downside I can think of is that it is a bit warm – doesn’t necessarily provide good heat escape. This can be overcome by removing a blanket.
The title of my review says it ALL – The smell of this sucker is STRONG!! [being similar to a chemical/new plastic/formaldehyde smell, all rolled into one], And last, like it seems FOREVER!!)
If you want to save yourself A LOT of grief, pain and suffering (on the Nose level), then for the Love-Of-God, AIR THIS SUCKER OUT, for at least a WEEK!! (Seriously! [most of the reviewers are RIGHT ON with this]) — After that, you will find that it is not only tolerable, but is rather enjoyable and plain COMFY!!
Is it worth it?, YES!! (The comfort is Beyond description or imagination!), but if you don’t air-it-out then you will SUFFER with all of the aliments [and more] listed by others (headaches, sneezing, etc., etc.) — (PS – It also does “reflect” your own body heat, as others have noted. But I like this, since I can turn the heater down [I'm sure the summers might not be that pleasant though]).
So, overall, do yourself a BIG favor. BUY IT and then LEAVE IT (unboxed/unfolded) out in your garage for a week or so, and then [afterwards] you’ll LOVE IT!!! (My 2 cents
I bought mine for the guest bedroom when I had elderly parents coming to visit. What a wonderful product! I unrolled it immediately upon receipt and laid it out over the bed to air for a couple of days before adding bedding, but I didn’t ever really notice the “chemical odor” that is noted by other buyers. I now use the guest bed for rest when my back or body is particularly stressed, especially on those nights when I’ve had a strenuous KINESIS workout at the gym. Very comfy. I can sleep all night here, but I can also lay down for 20 minutes and feel refreshed and ready to go again!
I can NOT use it with my regular mattress because our master bedroom mattress has the extra thick mattress with the suspension built in (as opposed to separate mattress and box springs). That is a very thick mattress and if I add a topper to it, then my linens won’t fit the bed.
We bought the memory foam topper to put on top our camp trailer mattress. The original mattress is really BAD. It considerably improved the “sleepability” of the bed. We don’t have any other foam mattresses so it took some getting used to. The mattress conforms to one’s body so turning over can be somewhat daunting. We bought the king size to go on our “trailer” queen size bed (which is shorter than a regular queen) since we were going to have to trim it anyway. Turns out that the width was close enough to the queen size that we only had to trim for length. That was really easy with a good sharp long bladed knife. So, for those of you out there with an uncomfortable RV mattress, this is a good solution.
It would have been nice if it would have come with some sort of sheet to make sure it stayed on the bed, but other then that it is extremely comfortable. I haven’t had it in the summer yet so I am not sure how it holds heat in. It took a few nights to get used to the feel of it since I have been using the same mattress for many years. Once I got used to it though I sleep a lot better and don’t have to toss and turn to get comfortable during the night. I sink in and go right to sleep.
I’ve been sleeping on a pretty high end pillow top mattress for more than 10 years, but recently I had to move and get a new bed. I got a futon from a friend. I don’t have very high regards for futons when it comes to comfort. I like a bed to be soft. That’s why I bought this foam pad. It’s everything I hoped it would be. It is soft and warm and I can hardly stand to get out of bed in the morning. If you like a soft bed (but still supportive) this is just what you’re looking for.
So I’ve had this topper for about 3 weeks or so and I am overall 80% satisfied with it. It comes folded and compacted into a midsized box. I took it out and let it regain its “memory” and put the topper on my bare mattress (I did not notice a strong chemical smell, yes there is a slight slight odor). I read some other reviews and people are looking for mattress topper covers and all this jargan, your normal double size mattress cover should cover both the mattress and the mattress pad, I have a pillow top mattress originally so yes the bed spread is a little tight on top of both but it works for me.
This is obviously not a “Tempurdpedic” brand mattress so if you have actually really laid on a real tempurpedic mattress pad this hardly compares, the real kind seems much more supportive. I personally think I should have went with the lower softness that this company offers, yes its all personal preference. And even if you buy a tempurpedic brand I don’t think it will magically heal your back pains. I’ve had back pains for a long time and I’m only 23 and I’ve been visiting a chiropractor for the past two months. The only problems I have ran into with this pad is that it slides under the covers while on top of my other mattress so I get some overhang on the edge of the bed, and right out of the box it seemed to be sagging in the middle. I can look at it right now and see the contour of the pad sagging in the middle, it could just be from me sitting in the middle of my bed “indian-style” and playing video games. What I have totally noticed is that I do not wake up once in the middle of the night, minus the times I take my sleep meds cause I have sleep problems too, AND I do not move at all during my sleep (I sleep on my side with my arms tucked under the pillow).
If you’re looking for more cushion than support I suggest you buy this, it all comes down to personal preference. I think I may buy a XL twin sized one for my futon, you’re butt seems to go numb after sitting on it for 15min, this pad will help that for sure. I only bought this one because Tempurpedic has outrageous prices. Something like $1800.00 for a new mattress by them and $800.00 for just the mattress topper. If you have the money just buy Tempurpedic, but don’t get me wrong by my review, this is a good cost effective way to get a tidbit more comfort. Who doesn’t like a comfy bed?
This wasn’t what I thought it would be. I wanted something more Temperpedic like. However, they made my return very easy and refunded me promptly.
I took a chance on ordering this because it seemed inexpensive & maybe too good to be true, but it was all I could afford. I’m so glad I took that chance because this topper is wonderfully comfortable and lives up to the description. There was no odor. It took about 3 hours to fully expand, and then was ready to go.
I’m using it on my hospital bed. I have fibromyalgia and spine degeneration as well as herniated disks in my back. This topper is amazingly comfortable. Nothing can make my sleep perfect as I have pain 24/7, but this has made a noticable difference.
I was using a 3″ memory foam topper I’d purchased on Ebay about six months ago. There is absolutely no comparison, and I intend to purchase another for my Queen bed as well.
This item caused two difficult nights when I woke several times due to a burning sensation. It was like sleeping on plastic.
I bought this pad and cut it half… to refill my large labrador retrievers’ beds. The dogs love their new beds and I saved a LOT of $ by not buying new memory foam dog beds. If you have dogs beds with zippered covers, consider replacing the filling with memory foam.
Getting the foam into the cloth cover was easier than I thought it would be. I turned the cover inside out, lined up the ends and then pulled the cover backwards over the foam. Stuffing it in might be a struggle.
I’ve just received my Twin XL 3-inch thick 5.5 lb. density Visco Elastic Memory Foam Mattress Topper from All-Sleep (Via Amazon). I’m 75 years old, weigh 260 pounds and have had beck pain for years that surgery didn’t eliminate. I’ve slept two nights on it now without ANY back pain—the first two nights for at least twenty years!
I like it so well I’ve ordered a thick cotton mattress cover and a memory foam pillow for it and plan to buy a one or two inch 4 lb density topper to go on top of it. I hope this is helpful to someone. Dick McKillop [...]
I ordered to replace an older topper purchased ages ago from Target. This topper is basically just rough cut industrial foam: No tapering on the edges, no cover. The cut size is approximate—not refined. It arrived in a clear plastic trash bag. It smells so strong and sharp we could not sleep and had to move to the guest room. Save your time—pay $20 more for one designated for sleeping (non Toxic, with a cover)
I got one of these things used from my mom, so I didn’t get a chance to smell the VOC’s when it was new. Then I moved cross country and left my foam topper on the other side of the US (Pacific Coast). I just bought one from another retailer (C*stc0) and it smelled to Formaldehyde.
I remember Formaldehyde was used in the older formulations of paint I made at work. The Formaldehyde is used as a Fungicide or Biocide to deter bio-contamination. So let it air out (or ‘off-gas’ as we say in chemistry) outside before you use it.
I bought it because it was so great to sleep on and my back missed it sooo much. It made my bed very comfortable, so it was hard form me to kick people off the bed when I wanted to sleep! So I had to give it 4 stars instead of 5 stars.
Now that I’m on the East Coast my back was killing me and I went to purchase the foam topper. I missed it soo much that I don’t mind the Formaldehyde smell… after I let it air out.
Wow. I bought this to use on top of one of those cotton futons. The futon is hard and dense and pretty uncomfortable. But with this thing on top? It’s just fabulous. The first time I slept on it I didn’t move all night. It’s great. I like it so much I bought a second one as a gift. The only problem is that it smells sort of strange for the first week.
