I bought the 4″ version of this and at first it seemed fine. The pad opened nicely over a few hours and the odor dissipated within a day or two. It had a definite memory property (when you push it down, it did not rebound immediately). Nice to sleep on.

After two months however, the memory effect has steadily diminished – and now is almost completely reverted to ordinary, bounce-back foam! Which would have been much cheaper to buy in the first place. I’m not sure how the memory effect can fade away (Alzheimers?) but I understand that less expensive foams contain fillers which break down over time. Note that one website which sells these has the following warning: “Due to the nature of Memory Foam the firmness level of every item is unique. Please be advised that even similar products may produce different firmness results.” Every item unique?? What does this mean? Probably that they source them from a number of different factories ..

As for the many glowing reviews here, I suspect these are from people who wrote immediately after purchase instead of waiting a few months.

My conclusion: The only reliably high quality memory foam on the market is probably that very expensive stuff from the industry leader.

Microwave ovens, satellite television, non-stick cookware and Velcro are just a few of the products brought to us through advancements in the now decades-old space program. Adding to this impressive list of consumer products from outer space is what has come to be referred to as memory foam.

This unique material has been steadily finding its way into all sorts of products including upholstered furniture. But no where has the impact been as big as in the incorporation of memory foam into sleep mattresses.

The development of memory foam mattresses makes sense since the original design intention of the foam was for use by astronauts as a way to sleep in the zero gravity or outer space. As a great example of a successful failure, the foam was never used in space for several very critical reasons, not the least of which was the high levels of chemical out-gassing.

The process of chemical out-gassing introduced levels of chemical contamination that was not very conducive to the clean-room atmosphere of the average manned spacecraft. Materials that are approved for manned spaced flight must meet several critical levels of cleanliness and must be free from residual memory foam 4 inch mattress topper chemicals and other potentially hazardous substances.

The good news for many sleepers is that memory foam was found to make an excellent material for sleeping right here on planet Earth. Since the nineteen seventies, a search was on to find an appropriate use for this unique and very dense foam. The answer came in the form of several brands of mattresses that incorporated some amount of memory foam into the design. Now memory foam can be found inside the mattress and outside conventional mattresses in the form of add-on pads that can add a layer of foam to almost any sized bed.

Memory foam is quite dense compared to other foam materials and can mold itself to the body in ways that other bedding materials simply can not. There can be vast differences in one manufacturer’s memory foam mattress to that of another manufacturer. The variances can include the over all thickness of the material, hardness, and quality.

The hardness or density of the foam can be compared by looking at the weight per cubic foot of material. Think of a box one foot square in size and imagine the box shape to be a piece of memory foam. There is a big difference in density between material that is two and half pounds per cubic foot and material that is four pounds per cubic foot.

As a general rule the greater the density of the foam, the more expensive the mattress. The overall quality of a memory foam mattress may depend on the other materials used, since the layer of memory foam may only make up three to four inches of the overall thickness of the mattress. Memory foam can be found atop traditional inner spring designs that are than wrapped in latex foam with visco-elastic foam placed on top, all encased in a traditional mattress covering.

The process of selecting a memory foam mattress is the same as selecting conventional bedding set. Give the mattress a thorough test drive keeping in mind that we spend quite a bit of our lives in bed. On average most of us spend well over 20 years of our lives in bed.

Just like everyone who tries out to be an astronaut, not every product developed for the space program actually makes that cut. Visco-elastic memory foam was one of those inventions but luckily, it made the cut in a way that has benefited everyone interested in a good nights sleep and an alternative to the conventional mattress.

LOVE IT! Got a very firm mattress that was making my shoulders and hips hurt, this pad COMPLETELY fixed the problem. It is smaller than the bed but I hardly notice, I think it has spread out with time. The smell took about 2 weeks to completely go away.

I liked this at first but now after a year of use it is getting really painful to sleep on my bed. I did some research and realized that this foam is 2.5lbs/square foot which is not enough support for even pixies like me. you need at least 4-5lb density foam, this is half of what i should have got. I am only 110 lbs, my bf is 150, and there are uncomfortable indentions in the foam now that dont spring back :(

I purchased the Sleep Better memory foam topper after reading tons of reviews on a variety of brands. I added the topper to my brand new mattress set because I was starved for the best rest possible. Wow! After years of restless nights, I now enjoy turning in at night knowing that I can expect to sleep peacefully and comfortably.

We have had a regular mattress for quite some time now. I had heard that these mattress toppers were good in previous reviews. I decided to try the 2 inch based on a review that said the 3 inch was just too much. The topper arrived in a few days after purchase in a much smaller box than I anticipated, but once we took it out it expanded to what I was expecting. There is a bit of a smell with it, but that goes away after a few days. I have some newer sheets that have that deep pocket and with the topper, the sheets actually fit the bed much better now. I really enjoy the topper and sleep much better now. I was afraid we might get hot, but that is not the case. My husband has issues sleeping due to back pain and he has noticed a considerable decrease in pain and is also sleeping better. I would recommend this item for anyone that uses just a regular mattress. It was well worth the money.

  5. Jantzen says:

I’m sure that this will come across as slight to some, but after a 24 hour grace period to let the pad expand, it was only 3.5 inches in thickness. I’m not returning the product, but if you are debating on purchasing this item then keep it in mind.

I have bought 100’s of items from amazon over the years, this is my first review; THAT is how disappointed I am with this product.

I bought this thinking it was a 5.5lb density memory foam mattress. This is definitely NOT the case. It is more like 2lbs per foot dense. A queen size 4″ topper is 80″ x 60″ x 4″, thus it is 19,200 Cubic inches. To convert that into feet, divide that figure by 1,728 (12×12x12) = 11.11111 Cubic feet of foam. SO, at 5.5 lbs per cubic feet, this topper should way over 60 pounds. But, shipped, with box and cover, this weighs in at a scant 24 pounds!

For someone looking for a low density memory foam topper, this may be the one. But, for those of us that think the 5.5 used in the advertisement of this topper refers to the density of the foam, they will probably be disappointed.

This mattress pad has held up well since we bought it about 2 months ago. It is however almost too thick, I think I would go down an inch in the future. The topper often times has to be readjusted because it starts to shift on the mattress, so make sure you have a deep pocket mattress pad and well fitting sheets to help keep the topper in place. Don’t expect to use the cover that comes with the topper for anything more than an extra layer to protect the foam it will not cover the mattress.

  8. McPherson says:

Wish I had read warranty before buying this memory foam mattress. After 6 months, mattress has lost support and takes a long time to recover shape. We are constantly turning and rotating mattress to try to find an area that still maintains support. E-mailed company, through Amazon, and was told to read warranty. First disclaimer in warranty states that warranty DOES NOT COVER increase in softness or decrease in slow recovery (retaining shape) features. Very poor product.

  9. Goldbeck says:

We bought the memory foam topper to put on top our camp trailer mattress. The original mattress is really BAD. It considerably improved the “sleepability” of the bed. We don’t have any other foam mattresses so it took some getting used to. The mattress conforms to one’s body so turning over can be somewhat daunting. We bought the king size to go on our “trailer” queen size bed (which is shorter than a regular queen) since we were going to have to trim it anyway. Turns out that the width was close enough to the queen size that we only had to trim for length. That was really easy with a good sharp long bladed knife. So, for those of you out there with an uncomfortable RV mattress, this is a good solution.

  10. Jeffre says:

The title of my review says it ALL – The smell of this sucker is STRONG!! [being similar to a chemical/new plastic/formaldehyde smell, all rolled into one], And last, like it seems FOREVER!!)

If you want to save yourself A LOT of grief, pain and suffering (on the Nose level), then for the Love-Of-God, AIR THIS SUCKER OUT, for at least a WEEK!! (Seriously! [most of the reviewers are RIGHT ON with this]) — After that, you will find that it is not only tolerable, but is rather enjoyable and plain COMFY!!

Is it worth it?, YES!! (The comfort is Beyond description or imagination!), but if you don’t air-it-out then you will SUFFER with all of the aliments [and more] listed by others (headaches, sneezing, etc., etc.) — (PS – It also does “reflect” your own body heat, as others have noted. But I like this, since I can turn the heater down [I'm sure the summers might not be that pleasant though]).

So, overall, do yourself a BIG favor. BUY IT and then LEAVE IT (unboxed/unfolded) out in your garage for a week or so, and then [afterwards] you’ll LOVE IT!!! (My 2 cents ;-)

  11. Carlton says:

Purchased this product after unsuccessful back surgery – it fit right over our fairly firm futon queen mattress and helps tremendously with relieving pressure points. Other reviews have mentioned the chemical smell. It is strong, but the manufacturer does include instructions regarding this and that it should be aired out for AT LEAST 24 hours.

The 2 inch one would probably have been a better choice as this is almost too thick, but it definitely made a difference with sleeping.

The only downside I can think of is that it is a bit warm – doesn’t necessarily provide good heat escape. This can be overcome by removing a blanket.
