I have bought sensus memory foam pads for every bed I have had to sleep on in the last few years, and I love them. [...] My first Sensus mattress topper was a 4 inch version from a bedding website and that did cost me over 400 and I still felt that it was worth it, but i would have given up the inch and just gotten the 3 inch version on overstock if I knew it would cost less than half that. The shipping costs on overstock are almost nonexistant as well. Maybe the person who said it wore out after 5 years wouldn’t be so upset if he/she only paid 170. That would work out to only $34/year.
Tempurpedic Mattresses, generically known as Memory Foam, are becoming mainstream items. Even so, with all the different options and prices of foam on the market, the consumer should know about the major differences between these products prior to paying a major amount of money for a bed they will be sleeping on for many years.
I've personally tried out a memory foam mattress and pillow set, and can honestly express enthusiasm for this product. It adapts to the contours of the body significantly better than an innerspring mattress. In any case, I personally cannot personally recommend a specific brand because every sleeper has different preferences due to weight and sleeping habits. The best thing to do is to visit your local bed store and try laying down on a couple different bed systems. When the sales staff have to prod you awake, you know you've discovered the right brand.

About five years ago, when our Simmons Beautyrest (plush) mattress started to develop body indentions (after only 3 years of ownership and plenty of mattress rotating/flipping) we bought a 1.25″ (unknown density) memory foam topper for about $50 when memory foam toppers first started becoming popular. It really seemed to help make our mattress more comfortable. Then after about 3 years we felt like our topper no longer felt as firm and resilient so we “upgraded” to a 2″ toppper (unknown density) for about $75. The 2″ topper actually seemed more uncomfortable than the 1.25″ topper since it had more give and halfway through the night you found yourself sleeping in a crater (just like our mattress was without a topper). Plus the 2″ topper was much “hotter” to sleep on then the 1.25″. We ended up swapping back to the original 1.25″ topper and put the 2″ to use in the guest room.
Three months ago we ended up realizing the “body indentions” in our mattress was so bad that we needed a new mattress. The mattress warranty company agreed and we received a replacement mattress. After doing some research we decided that instead of buying a plush mattress (which we liked the comfort of but which seem to be so soft that they develop body indentions sooner than the firm mattresses) that we would would instead buy a firm mattress and a nice, high quality topper with the thinking that the topper would wear out in 2-4 years but at least if we went with a firm mattress that the mattress itself would resist indentions longer than if we went with a plush mattress.
So after doing some research and reading various reviews I decided to select the Sensus 5lb 2″ topper. I also considered the Aerus topper for its temperature properties but the folks at Sleep Warehouse mentioned it did have more give to it and I also read a review from someone on another site who said they did sink down in it quite a bit (I know some people want their memory foam to have more give – we just don’t like sleeping in a large crater).
After having the Sensus on a brand new Simmons Beautyrest Firm Mattress I can say the following:
1) At 5lb density the Sensus foam is much firmer than any of the previous toppers we had. I would estimate our old 1.25 inch topper was probably 3-4 lb density and our 2″ topper was proabably 2-3lb density.
2) The initial smell was not too bad – we did air it out in the guest room for a week before using it. I would recommend doing the same.
3) It is warmer then our 1.25 inch topper but a little less warm than our cheap 2″ topper. Might be an issue when July/Aug rolls around if you do not have A/C.
4) After you have been laying on it for a while (1hr or longer) as the topper gets heated up from your body heat you do start to sink down. For us not as much as we did on our cheap 2″ topper but certainly more than we did on our 1.25″ topper. This is our only real complaint – that when you wake up in the morning you feel like you have slept in a crater or body indention – some people like that – we just like when it conforms to your body slightly not sinking way down.
So if I had to do it all over again I would have probably searched for a high quality topper that was thinner – say 1 or 1.5 inches thick. That way we would not sink down so much (and it would probably be cooler as well). If the Sensus came in a 1″ or 1.5″ configuration I would probably go with that but unfortunately right now 2″ is the minimum. They do now offer the Venus 8lb density topper in 1″ but that is almost 50% more expensive and I’m not so sure if an 8lb density foam would be too stiff … especially on top of a firm mattress. A 5lb 1″ topper would be ideal.
If I had paid less than $150 for this topper I would say it was worth every penny but at $260ish I wouldn’t say it was that much more superior in comfort to the 1.25 inch $50 topper we used to have. I know they have improved the technology so that these toppers are able to retain their memory characteristics longer but I am still thinking that anytime you lay on something (bed, couch, chair, topper, car seat, pillow tops) for 6-8 hours per day times 365 days a year it is going to degrade. But in our opinion it was cheaper to go through a toppper every few years than the mattress/box spring. And yes we also considered a Select Comfort air mattres system but after reading all the stuff written about it on Epinions and the complaints on BBB we decided that even those developed problems over time.
Hopefully our experiment of going with a firm mattress that won’t wear out as fast as the base and going with a “replaceable” sleeping surface as the top layer will pay off in the long run. Stay tuned. Too bad there isn’t a better solution out there which doesn’t cost as much as a used car.

If you are exposed to a large amount of toluene in a short time because you deliberately sniff paint or glue, you will first feel light-headed. If exposure continues, you can become dizzy, sleepy, or unconscious. You might even die. Toluene causes death by interfering with the way you breathe and the way your heart beats. When exposure is stopped, the sleepiness and dizziness will go away and you will feel normal again.
If you choose to repeatedly breathe in toluene from glue or paint thinners, you may permanently damage your brain. You may also experience problems with your speech, vision, or hearing, have loss of muscle control, loss of memory, poor balance, and decreased mental ability. Some of these changes may be permanent.
Toluene may change the way your kidneys work, but in most cases, the kidneys will return to normal after exposure stops. If you drink alcohol and are exposed to toluene, the combination can affect your liver more than either compound alone. This phenomenon is called synergism. Combinations of toluene and some common medicines like aspirin and acetaminophen may increase the effects of toluene on your hearing.
In animals, the main effect of toluene is on the nervous system. Animals exposed to moderate or high levels of toluene may also show slightly adverse effects in their liver, kidneys, and lungs.
Several studies have shown that unborn animals were harmed when high levels of toluene were breathed in by their mothers. When the mothers were fed high levels of toluene, the unborn animals did not show any structural birth defects, although some effects on behavior were noted. We do not know if toluene would harm your unborn child if you drink water or breathe air containing low levels of toluene, because studies in people are not comprehensive enough to measure this effect. However, if you deliberately breathe in large amounts of toluene during your pregnancy, your baby can have neurological problems and retarded growth and development.
Studies in workers and in animals exposed to toluene indicate that toluene does not cause cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) have not classified toluene for carcinogenic effects. Purchased 6 months ago to replace traditional innerspring mattress. This is an excellent bed, and has largely eliminated the aches and pains we had after sleeping on the old Serta. We placed plywood over the old box springs to create a suitable platform. There was a slight odor when first unpackaged but it quickly dissipated.
People who think this bed is too hard, you’re nuts! This bed is the best bed I have ever purchased. The smell is not bad by any means, you do notice it but it is not pungent and does eventually go away. All in all this mattress is a keeper.
The matress ballup into lump when you lay on it. The matress was deliver dirty on one side. And it had a very strong smell. It was hard to sleep with that smell.
this mattress was one of the best decisions I’ve made in a long time. The mattress was delivered very fast and in perfect condition. All my pain has disappeared when I awake the next morning. This mattress is much better than any traditional mattress I’ve owned. It also fluffs right back up and feels like a new mattress every time you lay back down on it.
This mattress is different from any that I have ever had before. It takes a little getting used to but is very comfortable.
Came in just under a week . Sleeps great . I would and will buy another for the grown kids room , to use when they come to visit .

I love the mattress, however give it atleast a week till your body adjust to its use. It does have the chemical smell that is not that irritating, and after 3 weeks I can still smell it but its getting lesser. For this price definitely a great deal

This mattress works! Finally!
The mattress ships compressed and is very heavy, so you’ll need assistance setting it up. Also, at the time I bought mine from this seller, they shipped it FedEx and required a signature upon delivery. Well, I work a regular job and couldn’t be there when the FedEx guy would come. So, I had to go to the FedEx warehouse with my trailer to get the thing. So, be advised of this.
As others have mentioned, there is a strong odor from the mattress lasting for a few days but it goes away.
Overall, I’m very satisfied.
It was a great mattress topper while it lasted. However, in less than five years of ownership I noticed the topper lost a considerable amount of firmness. It became too soft to sleep on except for the edges and I found myself waking up less refreshed. It’s like trying to sleep on a ‘V’ shaped mattress.
I contacted the manufacturer, Foamex, twice via email but they never responded. Finally I called and was told they won’t service the mattress; redirecting me back to the seller who has since gone out of business. I have no experience with this seller, however I would suggest anyone considering purchasing a Sensus brand viscoelastic mattress or topper be aware that you will likely have problems before the ten-year warranty has expired. Plus, even if you find a seller who doesn’t turn a warranty claim into a hassle, you will find they are rather expensive to repackage and ship. I will not purchase another Sensus or Reflex brand product.
Sensus is a Foamex product. (I’d done quite a bit of research and (through some prying phone conversations with Foamex) found out that they once supplied Tempurpedic.) They are THE memory-foam authority. (Let that sink in for a minute.) If Tempurpedic chose this company to make their products, it must be top-quality.
I own this particular topper and I can say it is everything you want a memory-foam product to be; resilient, durable, firm, supportive, responsive and COMFORTABLE! I promise, you won’t be disappointed with it.
I’ve also “done the math” and figured out the actual density. My Sensus topper has a density of 5.3 pounds per cubic foot; the exact density of the Tempurpedic topper. So there’s no skimping on density, here. I reiterate, the up-front price is tiny compared to the long-term value. Expect 5 years of flawless performance from this dense foam. You may even get ~10 years out of it, depending on use.
Some generic info about memory foam:
There’s a few things you MUST consider, it’s long but I think you will find this helpful.
#1 Density. Density refers to the weight of the foam given a certain volume. It is measured in pounds per cubic foot or lb/ft3. As a rule, the higher the density, the firmer and more resilient (durable) the foam. There are exceptions to this rule, but that’s for later. Generally speaking, a density of less than 3lb/ft3 is extremely soft, very low resiliency; it’s bottom of the barrel stuff and should be bought as a super light-duty item (for your toy poodle’s bed.) Foam with a density between 3lb/ft3 and 3.9lb/ft3 is marginal; expect it to be very soft and to wear out after a scant year of regular use. Densities of 4lb/ft3 – 5.3lb/ft3, you’re into the better range; expect this foam to be soft to medium firmness and to last for 2 years of regular use (at the high end of the range, up to 5 years). Memory foam with a rating of over 5.3lb/ft3 is where the quality products are found; these products can best be described as medium-firm to firm and should last 5 years or more (you pay for what you get.) There’s even an 8lb/ft3 foam on the market!(Good for the supportive middle layers of mattresses.) Some important notes: If you are a back-sleeper, I suggest a minimum of 5lb/ft3 memory foam; this will prevent sagging. Side-sleepers can get away with a softer density (4.5lb/ft3 is about the lowest I suggest for anybody.)
The firmness of memory foam varies greatly with temperature; a foam that is firm at 65 degrees can be squishy at 85; also, there are differences in manufacturing procedures that can produce very different firmnesses in different products of the same density. If you want to delve further, you’ll have to go looking for yourself; the details are far too complicated for this post. lol
#2 Thickness. After you’ve chosen the density that suits you, consider the thickness. I’ll keep this short; if you sleep on your back, go for about 2″ and if you sleep on your side, go for 3″. DON’T GET SOMETHING TOO THICK!!!, you’ll just get a hammock effect. (Higher density foams will be more supportive at any given thickness, so if there’s a choice between thick and light or thin and dense, go with the latter.)
#3 The Underlying Structure. If your old mattress is uncomfortable, putting a topper on it will not improve the situation by much. Memory foam is made so that it takes the shape of whatever is underneath it. If you need a new mattress, buy one. Expensive band-aids are just that…band-aids. Here’s a BIG hint: Use a 6″ thick slab of traditional polyurethane foam as the base for your topper; this will be a smooth, firm base. Remember this is NOT memory foam, it’s a dense version of what’s in your sofa cushions. Using a density of over 2.5lb/ft3 is vital for a base layer. If you need a new mattress get this as your base. Here, I can’t mention a particular website, but there are manufacturers that make this stuff: (you know how to Google it)

* DENSITY: 2.8lb/ft3
* COMPRESSION: 50 LBS
* FIRM
* EXTREMELY RESILIENT
(The site (which shall remain nameless) makes a medium firm conventional foam, too)
#4 Cost. Many make the mistake of confusing the price of a particular item with its cost. Considering that very high-density (5.5lb/ft3 and up) polyurethane memory foam (all memory foam is made from polyurethane but not all polyurethane foam is memory foam) can easily last twenty times as long or longer than a low density foam, I don’t need to explain how the “expensive” high-density products are anything but.
#5 The Break-In Period. Memory foam products will be their firmest when brand-new. After a break-in period of a few weeks, the foam softens significantly. So, when you first lie down on new memory foam, if it feels soft, you’re in trouble; for after the break-in period, it will be much too soft. A memory foam product should be almost uncomfortably firm right out the box; give it time; after a few weeks, it gradually soften to the perfect firmness. If it’s soft right out the package, SEND IT BACK!

I am not going to write about the smell, b/c it is there and everyone says that. It will go away. I am not going ot write about frustrations with Fed Ex, b/c that is not an actual review of the item. But I will say that having researched memory foam mattresses to death this one does not dissapoint. It is so comfortable and there is barely a difference between this and tempur-pedic. I was really apprehensive about purchasing this online…I mean how crazy is purchasing a mattress like that?? Trust me, it is worth clicking purchase. The moment this hugs your body you are hooked. It might also be worth looking into a platform bed. This thing is huge! It towers over my nightstands. So that’s my take…great price, great mattress, decent delivery time. How can you beat no taxes or shipping? I figured even if I didn’t like it, a $500 guest room bed wasn’t bad!
I had bought a 10″ Queen DynastyMattress for my daughter (previous review) and she loves it so I thought I’d give one a try. I replaced my $200 cheap spring mattress that I bought less than a year ago with a 12″ Full DynastyMattress. As I mentioned in my previous review, I have never slept on a memory foam mattress before so I knew I was taking a chance. I’ve always thought that they were too hard.
This mattress arrived about a week after I ordered it and uncompressed in a few hours. Yes, there is the smell but it didn’t bother me and went away after about 3 or 4 days. The first night it seemed a little different than a regular mattress but I woke up without any back pain for the first time in over a week. After that, I forgot I was resting on memory foam and it just seems like a regular mattress to me. Not too firm and it springs back when I change positions. My wife really likes it but says she won’t get one because her old Temper-Pedic made her too hot at night. I don’t notice that but I like being warm anyway.
Long story short, a sizable investment at $500 but worth every penny so far. No back pain and very comfortable. If I can get 5 years out of it I’ll be very happy.
